The economic class represents the largest portion of immigration to Canada, as almost 6 in 10 immigrants selected for permanent resident is from this category. Immigrates that are selected are highly skilled workers who apply from abroad, as well as highly skilled temporary workers and international students here inside Canada.

Professionals and skilled workers who apply for permanent residence in Canada must demonstrate a strong likelihood to become economically established in Canada. The main factors for selection, in economic class, are suitable education, work experience in a high-demand occupation, and ability to demonstrate language proficiency in one of Canada’s official languages (English or French).

Foreign nations applying for permanent residents in Canada can submit a profile in the Express Entry pool, then their profile is screen for eligibility to one of the three main economic class for immigration programs—Federal Skilled Worker Class, Federal Skilled Trades Class, and Canadian Experience Class.

Qualified candidates in the Express Entry pool are then ranked based on a score awarded under what is known as the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS).

The CRS awards points for factors in selection include age, education, skilled work experience and language proficiency in English or French, as well as other factors.

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), allows participating Canadian provinces and territories to nominate a set number of immigration candidates for permanent residence each year through its own unique program catering to each province’s needs. And since its introduction in the 1990s, this has now become the second most important pathway for skilled foreign workers to obtain permanent residence in Canada, after the Express Entry system.

Express Entry candidates who receive a provincial nomination are awarded an additional 600 points toward their CRS overall score, hence fast-tracking them for an invitation to apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence.

The province of Quebec manages its own immigration programs for Quebec skilled worker and the Quebec Experience Class.
